Hi friends -

We're sorry to announce that we're delaying Demonschool into the start of 2025. This is never fun, and we really didn't want to do it, but it's what's best for the game, and for the team as well.

We did have the perfect release date in Friday the 13th in September, but given how the last years have been and how much we wanted to put into this game, we had to delay it if we wanted to really deliver the game we wanted to give you all. We really didn't want to do it - it costs more money, which means we have to sell more copies to make that money back, and it means the team has to spend longer on the project instead of moving on to something new, which can be mentally taxing when you've already been working on something for so long.

But ultimately what matters is the final game. As players you probably wouldn't have noticed anything was "missing" if we had put the game out as-is in September. But delaying allows us to add more life and liveliness to the world, so it's more of a game you can hang out in, aside from smashing demons of course.

With the extra time we are:

  • starting to do devlogs every other week. You can see the first already. We even have tiktok versions.
  • adding a quiz section. one of our top requests at events like PAX has been more school aspects, so now you have to take weird tests at the end of the week!
  • adding more minigames. Won't spoil the details there.
  • adding more relationship stuff. I won't spoil this for now either.
  • brushing up the UI even further to make it cleaner and clearer.
  • adding Spanish(!) localization. We're targeting LATAM Spanish because we feel it fits the text best. We have noticed how many Spanish speaking fans there are and we wanted to reward them.
  • most importantly, finishing and finessing all the little sprite interactions during character dialog. This is what takes the most time, and what we would've had to cut down on if we had released on sept 13. but really, these are important. If you played the demo, you'd have noticed the rival character Kestrel hanging around eavesdropping on our team's conversations before she drops some critical info. This little detail isn't critical to the narrative but really helps to build out the world, and it would've been an extreme shame to lose it.
  • doing lots of other things you'll never know about but will FEEL IN YOUR BONES when you play the game (we hope).

Thank you for your understanding - we don't want to play on anyone's sympathies but it has been a difficult year, not as a team per se, but for each individual team member. We're really hoping to make a game you all will enjoy, and we hope you'll continue to support us. And dare we suggest... wishlist on steam??

<![CDATA[Demonschool Devlog #1: Burn status]]>https://necrosoftgames.com/demonschool-devlog-1-burn-status/66ccc451c08a480a1053359aMon, 26 Aug 2024 18:37:51 GMT

Like many tactics games, Demonschool has a number of status effects. Some of them are old standards. There's Poison, which reduces a character's HP by 1 per turn, or Stun, which keeps a character frozen in place until they are healed. Others are tweaks on effects we've seen elsewhere. Doomed, for example, kills the inflicted character within three turns unless they're healed, regardless of how much HP they have. Tethered is a Stun-like status that's only inflicted as long as a character is grabbed by an enemy. We also have the Possessed status, in which a demon rides your characters like a jockey, trying to move them into places where they'll take damage.

Demonschool Devlog #1: Burn status

But today I want to talk to you about Burn. This effect came to be when looking at the firey enemies we had already created. They should have something special to them, right? So our first stab was this: A character with burn status slowly loses HP, just like with Poison.

How should we differentiate this status from Poison, then? The idea came to me when I had one of our characters - which was currently on fire - punch a desk. With the desk being wood, it felt like it should go up in flames. So we got the idea that Burn status could be conferred to objects.

Then I thought of Far Cry 2 and how that game in its earlier days would allow fire to propagate across the entire map if left unchecked. Why shouldn't Burn status communicate across everything in the battle, I thought?

Demonschool Devlog #1: Burn status
Everything is on fire, propagated from one initial point of contact!

We tried it, and it was ridiculously fun. Now, if your character is on fire and they hit an enemy, the enemy will also be set on fire. If you hit an object, that goes on fire too. If your burning character stands next to an enemy or even a friend, they will go on fire next turn. You can set the whole playing field aflame. The problem is, of course, you're slowly losing health as you go around setting everything ablaze. You want your characters to lose health at a slower rate than everyone else. So the thing to do is heal your character. They'll lose their burn status in the process, but you can always retrieve it again from the flaming surroundings. So a brawler/healer combo, running around the world setting things on fire and healing each other, can act like a (twisted) firestarter team.

Demonschool has equippable techniques as well. These allow you to customize your characters, giving them resistance buffs, new movement methods, and lots more (we'll talk about this in a coming devlog!). We use techniques in lieu of a traditional leveling system. It's more like customizing your build than gaining stats through straight experience.

Several of these techniques are related to status effects, such as immunity to poison or stun. One of them allows your character to heal while standing in fire. So just imagine the combined effect of fire propagation with fire heal. It's a pretty powerful technique when you can line things up.

Thanks for reading, stay tuned for more behind the scenes looks at the development of Demonschool, and don't forget to wishlist the game on Steam!

We've also started doing video devlogs! Check it out!?

Hello friends!
We've just released a huge demo of our upcoming game Demonschool, representing (nearly) a full in-game week from about 10% of the way through game's main story.

Demonschool on Steam
Demonschool is a new-style tactics RPG where motion equals action. Defeat big weirdos in between the human and demon worlds as Faye and her misfit companions, while navigating university life on a mysterious island.
Tactics meets light horror - play the Demonschool demo now!

Demonschool is an RPG with tactical battles and a heavy story emphasis and influences from Italian horror films and Japanese horror manga. There are relationships to build, skills to learn, minigames, and a spooky but not scary story alongside a hybrid 2D/3D artstyle with unique vibes.

Tactics meets light horror - play the Demonschool demo now!

This demo is quite long! Since the game has a multi-day, multi-week structure, you can play it in bite-sized bursts or all at once, but we expect about 3 hours of content in here for someone looking to see everything.

There's much more development to be done but this should give you a strong impression of what the final game will be like. If you enjoy this you'll likely enjoy the final experience. You'll see more environments, more enemies, more story, more spookiness, and more goofiness.

Thanks for playing, and please wishlist the game if you like it! Enjoy!!

P.S. we've just revealed our release date - it's friday the 13th, September, 2024!

Hey friends!

In case you haven't seen, we released two entire trailers for Demonschool during the Summer Game Fest!

The first of the two features a few more bosses, a few more characters including a critical antagonist (in the thumbnail!), a little glimpse at the relationship system, and a lot of SECRETS that nobody will really understand until they play the game. This was edited by our marketing director Jenna Stoeber who has sadly for us (but happily for her!) moved on to a new job. She gave us a nice trailer on the way out!

The second trailer is a bit weirder - it's an homage to our love of practical effects and older media, and uses live action puppetry. Rest assured, there will be no puppets in the game itself! But there are definitely puppets in this trailer, which also shows off even more bosses, more characters, and a brand new music track from Kurt Feldman. This video features puppetry by Jack Fields, and was edited by Duncan Robson.

Both videos debuted on other channels first so our views look super low, but fear not, IGN and Game Trailers' uploads are much higher! But if you wanted to refresh each of these trailers about 5000 times to buff the numbers we wouldn't be sad about it.

Thanks as always for paying attention to us, wishlist Demonschool if you haven't yet, and we'll talk to you all again in about a week with some hot Hyper Gunsport info!!

Hyper Gunsport is NOW AVAILABLE!

Available on PC, Mac, and Linux at Steam or via Itch.io, on Xbox, Switch, and coming soon to PlayStation!

Hyper Gunsport is volleyball.... with GUNS. Solo player AND multiplayer arcade action with fighting game vibes, a pulsing soundtrack, a unique cast of characters, and a host of achievements to discover.

If you're not convinced, check out our high-intensity trailer:

At its core, Hyper Gunsport is a cooperatively competitive action game where the object is to shoot the ball into goals of varying difficulty, while the opposing team tries to do the same. Each time the ball crosses the net its point value goes up, so longer volleys mean bigger points and higher stakes.

A team is composed of two positions, a keeper and a striker. The keeper doesn't move, but can fire more frequently, and has a wider aiming range and shot radius - they're often used as defense. The striker can move and jump, but can take fewer shots, so they must be precise and must make them count. Will you burn shots and get aggressive, or set up an iron defense instead? The game encourages teamwork and competition by equal measures.

Hyper Gunsport is NOW AVAILABLE (and a small Demonschool update)

Features:

  • Solo and multiplayer play!
  • Circuit mode: an 8-round tournament, playable in local co-op or single player with an AI partner.
  • Versus mode: 4 player 2v2 or 1v1 local competitive play.
  • 7 arenas with dynamic gameplay and unique gimmicks, like moving goals or changing boundaries
  • 7 teams with unique stories -Random rule sets like BIG BALL, the floor is a goal, higher gravity, and more!
  • AI tournament: let the AI battle itself, wind it up and watch it go.
Hyper Gunsport is NOW AVAILABLE (and a small Demonschool update)

For the Demonschool faithful, we've got a little something for you as well: a new technique to show!

Techniques are our version of equips; they let you change each character's strengths and skillsets. This particular technique is a later-game one for Knute, our core team's healer.

Hyper Gunsport is NOW AVAILABLE (and a small Demonschool update)

We lovingly call this technique "heal train," because it allows him to heal any character he passes through! This is super powerful, and will certainly enhance your ability to school demons. Choo choo those boo boos!

<![CDATA[Hyper Gunsport announced!]]>https://necrosoftgames.com/hyper-gunsport-announced/61b151bb1f512a926e9d900cFri, 10 Dec 2021 20:11:00 GMT

Wow, it's been a long time coming for this one! We're happy to announce finally that Hyper Gunsport is coming to basically every platform, after many years of trials, trouble, and tribulations. For me who has been there from the beginning, this dumb game almost feels like a part of me.

Here's a timeline of events for Gunsport.

  • Mid-2013: I play the arcade game Dogpatch. The idea of a non-violent competitive shooting game entered my mind, somehow fused with volleyball, and there we were.
  • August 2013: We make a prototype.
  • September 2013: We bring the prototype to an impromptu event at Sony HQ during the Tokyo Game Show. Zun of Touhou fame played it, and we could not tell whether he liked it. I still don't know. I accidentally ask the head of publishing for Sony Japan to find me controllers and everyone is scandalized. (He was cool about it.)
  • February 2014: The game is featured at indiecade east in their multiplayer showcase. We commission Kurt Feldman to do actual music for it. We tell him the game will be out "pretty soon."
  • Mid 2014: We get a contract to publish Gunsport with a new publisher. Things look good.
  • 2014-2015: We go to dozens of trade shows. We get featured at Sony's PSX. We are in Microsoft's ID@Xbox showcase at GDC and pre-PAX. We show the game on stage at RTX, and at a party in Austria. Things look good. People have a good time.
  • Feb 2015: IDARB, a game featuring Gunsport characters as a special team, is released. We think Gunsport will be just behind it.
  • October 2015: While exhibiting Gunsport at the Tokyo Game Show, members of Arc System Works play the game and tell us to work on our "single credit play." We do. Development slows as we revamp our approach.
  • Late 2015: Our publisher stops being a publisher, and Gunsport is canceled. We feel bad and work on other stuff.
  • Early 2016: We get a pitch from a platform to bring Gunsport to mobile. This too is quickly canceled as the platform evaporates.
  • 2017: Initial target platforms PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are discontinued.
  • 2018: Almost every member of the team has changed. We rebuild Gunsport from the ground up. With no budget, we wind up canceling the game ourselves and working on other stuff again.
  • 2019: we hear Google Stadia needs games. We pitch Gunsport. We get accepted within two weeks.
  • 2020: after a year of revamps and multiplayer headaches, the game releases on Stadia. People like it. Lots of people play it. Finally!
  • 5 seconds after release: People start asking us to port the game to consoles.
  • Mid-2021: We find a new publisher in Hitcents. Hooray!
  • December 2021 (that's now): We announce Hyper Gunsport, our "Super Turbo" style sequel to Gunsport, for all available platforms, alongside Hitcents.
  • 2022: Everyone will finally be able to play Gunsport, the way we envisioned it back in 2013, 9 years later.

What a ride it has been for this little game. Thanks for sticking with us, please stay tuned for more, and please wishlist the game on steam!
